Josh Ritter – Live @ Fingerprints 4/16/10

Cousin Nick turned me onto Josh Ritter about 4 years ago, with the release of “The Animal Years”. Since that time, he has been a consistent performer in my iTunes/iPod.

If you haven’t heard of Josh Ritter before, the common (recurring) comparisons are Bob Dylan, Springsteen, Cohen and even James Taylor. He’s been heralded by Paste Magazine as one of the Top 100 Best Living Songwriters, as well as having his 2007 album “The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter” be touted in many year-end “Top” lists.

I was very happy to hear that a local record store, Fingerprints, was going to have Josh Ritter in for an in-store performance. For the purchase price of his new album, So Runs the World Away, we were treated to over an hour of solo, acoustic goodness.  After the show, we picked up our albums(not released for general purchase until 5/4) and had a chance to meet him for a few minutes.

Josh, Mariam and I... after discussing math, "I" states and eyeglasses.

I’ve only had a chance to listen to the new album once, but am infatuated with it already. “The Curse” is a beautiful ballad that was my favorite song from his in-store performance, and not because Iowa is mentioned in the lyrics. “Change of Time”, “Another New World”, “Long Shadows” are other early favorites.

Video of “The Curse” from that night’s performance (via fixapony):

Whether you’ve heard of his music before, or not, I hope that you look into his music. For starters, do yourself a favor and pick up this album… if you like what you’ve heard so far, I have a feeling you’ll like the entire album.

Josh Ritter – So Runs the World Away (AmazonMp3) Available 5/4.
